In November 2021 the Irish Government published the Sick Leave Bill for Statutory Sick Pay (SSP). This was approved in March 2022 and will come into effect in January 2023.

The main points of this bill are:

  • Paid sick leave for up to 3 sick days in 2023. This is planned to increase to 5 days in 2024, 7 days in 2025 and 10 days in 2026.
  • A rate of payment for statutory sick leave of 70% of normal wages to be paid by employers (up to a maximum €110 per day).
  • To be entitled to paid sick leave under the new scheme, the employee must have been working for the employer for at least 13 weeks.
  • The employee will also need to be certified by a GP as unfit to work.

Please see our knowledge base article below for more information on this bill and processing it in Sage Payroll.
