Vince Lombardi

2016

I had never heard of Vince Lombardi. He is the origin of a quote that I saw shared on Twitter the other day, and it really caught my eye.

And it’s true.  In this digital age we rarely write our signature.  No longer is there an “x” to sign.  Many painters throughout history did not sign their work.  Some chose to hide their names so as not to detract from the work.  Some, like Picasso, have become iconic and recognisable in their scrawl.

Vince Lombardi was a football coach, didn’t have to sign his work.  His famous plays and wins were his autograph.  He was considered one of the best coaches in NFL history.  He was a great leader, and knew his strengths and his weaknesses.

Nigel and I are going to Sage Summit and one of the keynote speakers is Richard Branson.  He is, without doubt, also great leader.  And definitely leaves his “autograph” on all his businesses.  Yet if you look at his “tips” for being a great leader, they include-

• Do some Good
• Have Fun
• Go out and meet people

In fact over half of them are not directly linked to business at all.  Which is probably the secret to his success.

So let’s take a leaf out of both Vince’s and Richards’s books.  And hopefully create customers for life, further embrace the challenges for our business, and do some good.  And most importantly- have fun while we’re doing it.
